Gulph Mills Encampment Memorial is coming back to Rebel Hill!

Thanks to the Pennsylvania Sons of the Revolution, their 1892 memorial to the Gulph Mills Encampment of the Revolutionary War, December 12 – 19, 1777, is returning to the base of Rebel Hill on Friday, November 7–where it belongs!

The memorial–which weighs 20,000 pounds–will be moved to the grounds of the Sunoco gas station, 1308 Gulph Road, directly across from Savona Restaurant, 100 Old Gulph Road, Gulph Mills. The same company that moved the memorial in 1986 to Executive Estates Park in Gulph Mills, where it currently is located, will be moving it on Friday. A 1905 photo shows the memorial at South Gulph Road/PA 320, and Balligomingo Road. The PA Department of Transportation urged the Sons to move the rock for its own protection due to increasing road traffic and construction on Gulph Road.

Once the memorial is safely in place, the PA Sons of the Revolution will have a rededication ceremony, probably on the morning of December 16, and I will be there. Stay tuned for details!

For more information about the 1892 dedication and the words on the memorial, see my book Threshold to Valley Forge (pg. xi, Introduction).

The below photo is me at the memorial on Super Bowl Sunday 2025, when our beloved Philadelphia Eagles won. Go Birds!

  2. So you’re moving it from a park entrance where people could read and appreciate the monument, to next to a gas station where nobody will read it and just drive by. Please make sense of that for me.
